The University of Minnesota Anterior Skull Base Surgery Center specializes in diagnosing, evaluating, and treating the wide range of diseases that affect the anterior skull base. The anterior skull base is a complex region of the skull that exists at the boundary of the intracranial (brain) space and the lower portions of the facial skeleton (like the nose, sinuses, throat, neck, and orbit). Many nerves and arteries run through this region that control a number of critical functions like smell, vision, facial sensation, blood flow to the brain, hormone control, and the ability to chew and swallow, amongst others. Diseases that affect the anterior skull base can create a wide variety of complicated problems for patients.
